Approximately 75% of American adults have some level of gum disease. Gum disease also known as periodontal disease is the primary cause of tooth loss after age 35. However, if caught in its early stages, periodontal disease can be reversed and maintained with proper care.
Gingivitis, the mildest form of gum disease, consists of red, swollen, tender, and bleeding gum tissue and its supporting structures normally fit tight around your teeth. If not treated, the disease can progress to periodontitis, where gums pull away from your teeth, creating pockets, which harbor bacteria leading to bone degeneration and potential tooth loss.
If periodontal disease is suspected, we will recommend a more thorough “deep clean” to remove the bacteria and build up around your teeth and below your gums. This deep clean involves administering local anesthetic to provide a more comfortable experience. Routine cleanings every 3-4 months may be needed to help keep your periodontal condition stable. If your condition is more severe, a referral to a specialist may be given to ensure you are receiving all treatment options and recommendations.
